Increasing Successful Prosecutions

Under Dave’s leadership, Palm Beach County has seen a remarkable increase in the successful prosecution of both felony and misdemeanor cases.

In 2012, the misdemeanor conviction rate was only 58%. By 2018, the conviction rate had increased to 96%. The felony conviction rate was 85% in 2012; it had grown to 95% by 2018.

In total, under Dave’s leadership, successful convictions have risen by nearly 38% overall.

Fighting the Opioid Crisis

Dave has been at the front lines of the battle against the opioid crisis. Since launching the Sober Homes Task Force in 2016, Palm Beach County has seen a dramatic decrease in opioid deaths. For example, between 2017 and 2018, the number of deaths related to opioid overdoses reduced in Palm Beach County by a staggering 40%.

Dave’s expertise on the issues of opioid abuse, rogue sober homes and insurance fraud has gained him national attention. He has been a regular commentator on major cable news outlets and featured on programs such as 60 Minutes; he is also a frequent speaker at conferences across the country focused on the opioid crisis.

In 2017, Dave testified before Congress about problems stemming from illicit rehab clinics and insurance fraud. He has since launched a website (www.FixTheFloridaShuffle.com) to help advocate for federal policy changes that can save lives and stop criminal drug activity.

Cracking Down on Human Trafficking

In February of 2019, Dave led the State Attorney’s Office in charging 25 individuals with soliciting prostitution in one of the largest crackdowns on human trafficking in Florida history.

This crackdown was a part of a statewide initiative that helped shed light on the illicit world of human trafficking and prostitution that is hiding in plain sight in many Florida communities. The sting resulted in many illicit spa operators being arrested and held accountable for what many have referred to as a type of modern day slavery, forcing poor immigrants into a form of indentured servitude.

Stopping Animal Abuse

If you know Dave, you likely also know his best friend and adopted basset hound, Cookie. Nicknamed the “Hound of Justice,” Cookie is a constant reminder for Dave that humans have a responsibility to protect and defend our pets and animals. That moral responsibility has translated into our State Attorney’s Office taking an aggressive approach to prosecuting individuals charged with animal cruelty.

In 2017, Dave made headlines by personally prosecuting a successful case against an individual charged with chaining a friend’s pit bull to a fence, denying it food and water, and starving her until her bug-infested body was just 23 pounds (the average weight of a pit bull is roughly 35-60 pounds). In 2016, Dave received the national Wings Award by the Pegasus Foundation for his work on animal welfare issues.
