Meet Dave Aronberg

Dave Aronberg is an accomplished public servant who has dedicated his career to keeping our community safe.

In 2012, Dave was elected State Attorney for Florida’s 15th Judicial Circuit, where he manages a team of 120 prosecutors and 220 professional staff in five offices throughout Palm Beach County.

Since he took office, conviction rates have increased from 64% to 96% since 2012, opioid overdose deaths dropped by 40% in 2018 compared to 2017, the number of non-violent juveniles direct-filed into adult court has decreased, and the office’s partnership with federal and state prosecutors has never been stronger.

His work fighting the opioid crisis through his Sober Homes Task Force has gained national attention and has received multiple awards. Since October 2016, the Task Force has made more than 85 arrests for patient brokering and insurance fraud, cleaning up corruption in the local drug treatment and sober home industries. The legislative proposals from his Task Force led to new Florida laws that have become the model for other states, and his Grand Jury recommendations even led Google to change its policies for drug rehab advertising. In addition, Dave has testified twice before Congress to urge Federal lawmakers to adopt policy changes that would stop the illegal patient brokering and insurance fraud that keep patients in an unending cycle of opioid dependence. As part of this effort, Dave launched a website, www.FixTheFloridaShuffle.com, to inform the public about the dangerous scams infiltrating the drug treatment industry, and urging federal action.

Before being elected State Attorney, Dave fought the opioid crisis as Special Prosecutor for Prescription Drug Trafficking (“Drug Czar”) in the Florida Attorney General’s Office. His career in the Attorney General’s Office started back in 1999, when he led investigations of consumer fraud cases, including prescription drug pricing scams and predatory lending schemes.

In 2000, President Bill Clinton appointed Dave as a White House Fellow, where he served as a Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Treasury Department for international money laundering, including the laundering of terrorist assets. After returning to Palm Beach County in 2002, Dave was elected to the Florida Senate as its youngest member. As a State Senator, Dave passed major legislation on identity theft and child sex predators, and served as the Chair of the Everglades Restoration Committee, as well as the Military Affairs and Domestic Security Committee.

A native Floridian, Dave attended public schools before graduating from Harvard College and Harvard Law School, with honors. After graduation, Dave worked in the litigation department of a large South Florida law firm while also working closely with then-Insurance Commissioner Bill Nelson to investigate European insurance companies that refused to honor World War II-era policies sold to victims of the Holocaust.

If you know Dave, you likely also know his best friend and adopted basset hound, Cookie. Nicknamed the “Hound of Justice,” Cookie is a constant reminder for Dave that humans have a responsibility to protect and defend our pets and animals. That moral responsibility has translated into our State Attorney’s Office taking his aggressive approach to prosecuting individuals charged with animal cruelty. Active in pet rescue organizations, Dave has personally prosecuted cases against animal abusers, obtaining felony convictions and jail time. For his leadership on animal welfare issues, the Pegasus Foundation honored Dave with its national Wings Award.

Dave’s legal expertise and breadth of experiences has led to frequent appearances on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” and other national news programs as a legal analyst, as well as a featured speaker on the opioid epidemic at conferences around the country. In 2018, Dave was interviewed on the season premiere of CBS’s 60 Minutes about his office’s successful prosecution of a notorious pill mill doctor. As witnessed by millions of Americans, Dave has a passion for justice and a love for his job as State Attorney.
